Autumn Days and Geocaching

Geocache Virginia trailWhat is all of this “geocaching” that we keep hearing about? Come to Autumn Days in Victoria October 4th from 9am-5pm. There will be a geocaching demonstration on the Tobacco Heritage Trail in Victoria at 10:30am. It will be lots of fun and a great way to be introduced to this free and fun outdoor activity!

Your expert geocacher for the day will be Larry Roach. We know you’ll be in capable hands, as he holds the record for the most caches found in the state of Virginia. Who better to learn from than someone with Larry’s experience? Larry has hidden nearly 30 caches along the Tobacco Heritage Trail and Railroad Park in the town of Victoria. Some of the caches are in plain sight if you know what you’re looking for, while others are cleverly disguised. You will enjoy the hunting and the thrill of discovery of a handful of these caches to get you started and then you’re on your own to explore!

You don’t need any kind of special equipment to participate in the demonstration, but we do recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you’d like to try caching on your own after the demonstration is over, you will need a GPS device or a Smart Phone on which you can download a free app. We recommend “c:geo”. It’s free and fairly reliable. You’ll also have to take a little time creating your own geocaching account. We suggest you do this ahead of time so you can have time to think about your unique cacher nickname and familiarize yourself with the website.
