New Tobacco Heritage Trail Coordinator Hired

People Person Fills Needed Gap For Tobacco Heritage Trails Coordinator

Southside Planning District Commission recently hired long time Brunswick County resident, Cherie Nielsen, as the Tobacco Heritage Trail Coordinator, a part-time position which promotes and brings together organizations and events on the trails.  The position, funded by Virginia Tourism, will give Cherie flexibility to travel the trails, visit with localities, and bring exposure to beautiful Southside Virginia.

Cherie has set goals that will increase visibility and traffic on the trails, which expands from Halifax County into Brunswick County.  With a background in advocacy at the state and national level regarding school choice, she has experience starting things from the ground up.

“My background is customer relations and advocacy.  I truly do have a people personality and enjoy promoting things that mean a lot to me.  When I heard about the position being open for the Coordinator, I did not hesitate saying I’d be a great fit for the job.  I love social media and seeing how events can spread like wildfire with just a quick note” Cherie said.  As coordinator, she is eager to celebrate the heritage that surrounds the area and bring people together through traveling, whether by bike, horseback, or hiking.

Her role with the SPDC will have her working alongside the Roanoke River-Rails-to-Trails Board of Directors, localities, volunteers, and maintenance departments concerning the rails to trails.

Gail Moody, Executive Director of Southside Planning District Commission said,  “She is a true representation of what we had in mind for the role.  She is driven and a natural people person. We are looking forward to working with Cherie along with promoting the trail”.

You can contact Cherie Nielsen at  by email THT@nullsouthsidepdc.org, call 434-447-7101 or visit the Tobacco Heritage Trail on Facebook.
