La Crosse to Brodnax – Round-trip 6.6 mile

La Crosse to Lawrenceville Map

You could hop on the Tobacco Heritage Trail in La Crosse and head East all the way to Lawrenceville, but for a shorter trip, follow the itinerary below!

  • Park at 115 South Main Street  La Crosse, VA 23950 or the High Street trailhead. When the La Crosse Hotel is fully renovated it will contain a Visitor’s Center. There you’ll find a trail map, information about tobacco farming history of Southern Virginia and available handicap accessible restrooms. Stay tuned for the completion date of this project! (It is not yet accessible.)
  • Take some family photos at the antique caboose in the center of town.
  • You’re all set! Head East down the trail towards Brodnax. This hike/ride is a 3.3 miles.  This is a smooth easy walk for families and those unaccustomed to hiking. This section of trail is paved and is ideal for bicycles, roller scooters, baby strollers or wheelchairs. As you journey you will pass town businesses, churches, and residences before you enter the woods. At this point expect to see birds, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies and the occasional snake. Please be respectful of all wildlife. You will also pass an abandoned tobacco barn near the regional airport. These remains stand sentinel to tobacco farming in Southern Virginia.
  • Around the 3 mile mark you will come to the Regional Airport Road trailhead. There you will find benches, trash cans, bike racks and an informational sign. Just 0.3 miles down the road you will reach the end of the off-road section of THT. A short distance from the trail is a native icon, Whitby’s Store. Pay a visit for summer fresh produce, locally canned pickles and jams or an ice cold soda! A home-grown peach will hit the spot after a hot day on the trail.

La Crosse to South Hill – Roundtrip 10 milesprinter friendly version

  • Park at 115 South Main Street  La Crosse, VA 23950.
  • This 5 mile connection between La Crosse and South Hill is winding and hilly. There is beautiful countryside filled with trees and pastures to enjoy, but this on-road route is best for experienced cyclists.
  • While in South Hill make sure to visit the Tobacco Farm Life Museum of Virginia on 306 W. Main Street / (434) 447-2551. Open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM – 4PM. They have an interesting film depicting tobacco farming history and modern technology and two floors of farming equipment, artifacts and photographs, as well as a tobacco barn that visitors may tour on the outside of the museum.
  • Trail users may also want to visit the Chamber of Commerce building located a short distance away at 201 S. Mecklenburg Avenue. This old train depot building features the Doll & Train Museums and an antique red caboose!
  • If you happen to be around for lunch take advantage of the multiple eatery options. Try the Glass House Grill, Brian’s Steakhouse or the Horseshoe which has delicious onion rings!
