Roundtrip 5.2 miles ~ Ideal for history lovers printer friendly version

  • Park at Cotton Mill Park trailhead located behind the historic Prizery on Railroad Avenue.
  • This 2.6 mile rail trail has a lot to offer history buffs. The trailhead is situated at the former cotton industry of South Boston featuring two brick towers and the remains of an old cotton mill. Just a little ways down the trail at the spur, you will see a sight to peak your curiosity – an old sluice gate. At one time the sluice was raised and lowered to adjust the water level, but during a particularly destructive storm it was rendered inoperable. Other features of this section of THT include a duck impoundment, Diamond Hill Slave Cemetery, views of the Dan River, a natural spring and access to historic Berry Hill Plantation.
  • Be sure to also visit the Prizery to see their tobacco exhibit and the Crossing of the Dan Revolutionary War exhibit. Available at the Prizery is a trail user restroom facility.
  • Tobacco Heritage Trail souvenirs can be purchased at the Halifax Visitor’s Center located on Highway 58 (1180 Bill Tuck Hwy, South Boston, VA 24592).
