Boydton, VA

Roundtrip – 2.2 miles

  • There are trailheads on either end of this section of the Tobacco Heritage Trail, with one being located on Washington Street and the other on Prison Road.  The Washington Street trailhead is the larger of the two and can better accommodate those pulling trailers.
  • This 1.1 mile trail is a relatively easy hike.  Most of the trail is shaded by the overhead tree canopy.
  • Be sure to visit The Boyd Tavern, a National Historic Landmark, while in town.  It is a very short walk from the trailhead on Washington Street.

Brodnax, VA

Roundtrip (Brodnax to La Crosse) – 6.6 miles

  • Park at the trailhead just off Highway 58 along Regional Airport Road in Brodnax, VA 23920.
  • Head West down the trail towards La Crosse. This hike/ride is a 3.3 miles. This is a smooth easy walk for families and those unaccustomed to hiking. Your journey will take you by the regional airport and into the woods. At this point expect to see wild turkey, deer, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies and the occasional snake. Please be respectful of all wildlife. Eventually you will pass town businesses, churches, and residences and emerge in the Town of La Crosse.
  • Restroom facilities are located approximately 1.4 miles down the trail near the Airport Industrial Park.
  • Take some family photos at the antique caboose in the center of town.
  • When you return to Regional Airport Road, just 0.3 miles East down the trail you will reach the end of the off-road section of the THT.

Roundtrip (Brodnax to Lawrenceville) – 28.4 miles

  • Park at the trailhead just off Highway 58 along Regional Airport Road in Brodnax, VA 23920.
  • Head East down the trail towards Lawrenceville. This hike/ride is 14.2 miles. This surface is a smooth compacted crushed stone and is easily walkable for families and those unaccustomed to hiking.
  • For cyclists, tires 35mm and wider are suggested.
  • Your journey will take you through the Town of Brodnax via Railroad Street and into the woods. At this point expect to see wild turkey, deer, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies and the occasional snake. Please be respectful of all wildlife. Eventually you will pass town businesses and residences and emerge in the Town of Lawrenceville.
  • You can also take advantage of the amenities along this trail segment which include benches, picnic tables, horse mounting benches and hitching posts and four restrooms.
  • Take some family photos at the antique caboose on the former turntable property and learn about the rail history of Lawrenceville by reading the interpretive sign.
  • While in Lawrenceville you may like to eat lunch at one of the down town restaurants, explore the antique and thrift stores, or visit the Brunswick Museum and Historical Society.

La Crosse, VA

Roundtrip (La Crosse to Brodnax) – 6.6 miles

You could hop on the Tobacco Heritage Trail in La Crosse and head east all the way to Lawrenceville, but for a shorter trip, follow the itinerary below.

  • Park at 115 South Main Street  La Crosse, VA 23950 or at the trailhead located on High Street.
  • Take some family photos at the antique caboose in the center of town.
  • You’re all set! Head East down the trail towards Brodnax. This hike/ride is 3.3 miles.  This is a smooth easy walk for families and those unaccustomed to hiking. This section of trail is paved and is ideal for bicycles, roller scooters, baby strollers or wheelchairs. As you journey you will pass town businesses, churches, and residences before you enter the woods. At this point expect to see birds, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies and the occasional snake. Please be respectful of all wildlife. There is a restroom located along the trail near the Airport Industrial Park.
  • Around the 3 mile mark you will come to the Regional Airport Road trailhead. There you will find benches, trash cans, bike racks and an informational sign. Just 0.3 miles down the road you will reach the end of the off-road section of THT.

Roundtrip (La Crosse to South Hill) – 10 miles

  • Park at 115 South Main Street  La Crosse, VA 23950 or at the trailhead located on High Street.
  • This 5 mile connection between La Crosse and South Hill is winding and hilly. There is beautiful countryside filled with trees and pastures to enjoy, but this on-road route is best for experienced cyclists.
  • Trail users may also want to visit the Chamber of Commerce building located a short distance away at 201 S. Mecklenburg Avenue.
  • If you happen to be around for lunch take advantage of the many local options!

Lawrenceville, VA

Roundtrip (Lawrenceville to Brodnax) – 28.4 miles

Featured with wooden footbridges, leaf covered ravines and mossy rocks, it’s no wonder why one trail user commented about the Lawrenceville trail section, “this looks like the place where stories begin!” Whether your tale is a family adventure, a fairytale engagement, or a personal triumph, we hope you will visit Lawrenceville to create your very own story.

  • Park at the trailhead located on South Street in Lawrenceville, VA 23868.
  • This path winds slowly upward and is a good work out, but is smooth sailing on the way back.
  • When you plan to make a trip to the Lawrenceville section, plan to pack a picnic! There are some lovely wooded spots along the trail with picnic tables for a sandwich al fresco.
  • During the first leg of your journey you will see an open field with a red caboose and stalls. This is what is left of railway which used to run along the path the Tobacco Heritage Trail now occupies.
  • Pass on through the town of Lawrenceville west towards Brodnax and the domestic surroundings give way to the untamed forest. The first bridge greets you with an informational sign about tobacco farming history in Southern Virginia.  It explains the namesake of the Tobacco Heritage Trail.
  • Expect to see more bridges, wild mushrooms and colorful flowers dotting the brown leaf covered landscape. Keep your eyes open for deer, squirrels and butterflies.

Lawrenceville Trail Head

South Boston, VA

Roundtrip – 7.8 miles

  • Park at Cotton Mill Park trailhead located behind the historic Prizery on Railroad Avenue.
  • This 3.9 mile rail trail has a lot to offer history buffs. The trailhead is situated at the former cotton industry of South Boston featuring two brick towers and the remains of an old cotton mill. Just a little ways down the trail at the spur, you will see a sight to peak your curiosity – an old sluice gate. At one time the sluice was raised and lowered to adjust the water level, but during a particularly destructive storm it was rendered inoperable. Other features of this section of THT include a duck impoundment, Diamond Hill Slave Cemetery, views of the Dan River, a natural spring and access to historic Berry Hill Plantation.
  • Be sure to also visit the Prizery to see their tobacco exhibit and the Crossing of the Dan Revolutionary War exhibit. Available at the Prizery is a trail user restroom facility.
  • Tobacco Heritage Trail souvenirs can be purchased at the Halifax Visitor’s Center located on Highway 58 (1180 Bill Tuck Hwy, South Boston, VA 24592).

South Hill, VA

Roundtrip (South Hill to La Crosse) – 10 miles (on-road, best for experienced cyclists)

This 5 mile connection between South Hill and La Crosse is winding and hilly. There is beautiful countryside filled with trees and pastures to enjoy, but this on-road route is best for experienced cyclists.

Even though there is not an official trailhead for the town of South Hill, there is plenty to see and experience. If you want to begin your trail journey in South Hill, you are welcome to park in the downtown Market Square parking lot on South Mecklenburg Avenue, Sunday-Friday. Saturdays, the Market Square is home to the Farmers Market and parking is available across the street at the public library. Then travel on Goodes Ferry Rd towards the town of La Crosse.

  • The Farmers Market is one of those experiences worth checking out. Some of the things you may see is seasonal produce, home baked goods, gourd art, hand sewn items, and even a local beekeeper and his honey.
  • Trail users may also want to visit the Chamber of Commerce building located a short distance away at 201 S. Mecklenburg Avenue.
  • If you happen to be around for lunch take advantage of the many great local options.

Victoria, VA

Roundtrip – 4 miles

  • Park at Victoria’s own Railroad Park, 1403 Firehouse Road, Victoria VA 23974.
  • Either before or after your trip enjoy what Victoria’s 21 acre Railroad Park has to offer. The park is located almost downtown and is in the central business district. The park currently has 2 pavilions, playground equipment, restroom facilities, volleyball sand court, horseshoe pits, paved walking trails, gravel walking trails, geo-caches to find and historical Virginian Railroad cars caboose and equipment.
  • This two mile section of trail is peacefully wooded. It is the ideal hike for someone seeking solitude as a companion.
